turned into a city, which to this day lures with its rich tradition, glorious history and beauty of its natural and cultural heritage.
Diocletian Palace and the entire historical core of Split have been on the World Heritage UNESCO list ever since 1979, and not only for the extraordinary preservation of the Palace, but also because the Palace and its city (or the city and its Palace, if you like) continue to live a full life. All historical layers from the old Rome, middle ages till today are still visible and alive in this structure. A walk through the ancient city takes you through time, along the great examples of ancient architecture like Peristyle, the middle aged Romanesque Church and Gothic Palace, Renaissance portals of the noblemen’s houses, Baroque facades and modern architecture superbly merged in the rich heritage.
Such stratification is mirrored in everyday life of Split. Local inhabitants sit in the same cafes, restaurants, shop in the same stores as tourists, giving them the impression that, by arriving to Split, they became a part of the city and its rhythm. The vegetable market and the fish market represent the centre of each family’s life in Split, just as the entire social life of this city of 200 thousand reflects on the Riva (waterfront), where every guest should endeavour to have his coffee alongside noisy, temperamental folk of Split.
Split is much more than glorious architectural scenery. Split is also a venue for excellent gourmet and vine experiences, numerous cultural happenings like film and theatre festivals, exhibitions, excellent museums and concerts, a city which offers eclectic modes of entertainment starting with numerous clubs and bars, through street festivals to events such as Ultra Europe Festival visited each year by up to 100 thousand young people from around one hundred countries of the world. Split with its sport results is something only a handful of cities of similar size around the world can boast about as it is the home of a dozen Olympic medal winners as well as other sports medals.
When you are tired of the city bustle, there’s Marjan, hill symbol over the city, with its forest, jogging trails, mountain climbing and biking, recreational terrains, but also the ancient churches where the late citizens of Split sought spiritual peace. Also very unusual to find in a city the size of Split are the numerous beaches with extraordinarily clean sea, from the well known Bačvice to the stone secluded oases’ all around Marjan.
After all that’s said are you at all surprised that citizens of Split have a saying "There is no place like Split”?

Split is one of the oldest cities in the area. While traditionally considered just over 1,700 years old, counting from the construction of Diocletian's Palace in 305 CE, the city was in fact founded as the Greek colony of Aspálathos (Aσπάλαθος) in the 4th century BC, about 2,400 years ago. It became a prominent settlement around 650 CE, when it succeeded the ancient capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia, Salona: as after the Sack of Salona by the Avars and Slavs, the fortified Palace of Diocletian was settled by the Roman refugees and slowly started to become a city.

with accommodation, beaches, night clubs, museums, ferry port etc. There is a true Mediterranean spirit of the town.

Bačvice is most famous and most popular beach in the Split. It is all from fine sand. Bačvice is also name for district of the city. Interesting thing is that beach Bačvice is located in very center of the city. The distance is about 10 to 15 minutes of walking from Diocletian Palace. Although the beach is in very center of city, still it has blue flag; award for most cleanest and organized beaches in Europe. In summer period beach is very crowded with local population and tourists also. The sea on the beach bay is very shallow. You need to walk 50m in sand before you can reach enough dept to swim. Because shallow sea you will see lot of people playing local game – pincigin. One of night parties in Split on beach bačviceThe rule is simple – few people staying in circle must maintain small ball in the air as long as possible. Beach Bačvice is also most popular all year night destination in Split. There is lot of night clubs on the same beach and in summer you can see more young tourists in those night clubs than locals. Also you can enjoy in night swimming on beach Bačvice because sea is warm and air is hot even at night.

5 minutes walking from beach Bačvice there is next bay called Ovčice beach. Ovčice is much smaller pebble beach and it is also popular for locals and tourists. Here you can also rent a beach chair and sunshade, you have showers and there is smaller playground for children with trampoline and few swings. On the beach there is restaurant with same name and above is parking space in pine trees forest but it could be crowded during summer.

Next 5 minutes walking from Ovčice you will see next popular bay – small sand beach Firule. Beach is popular destination for citizen and tourists alike, although this is more family friendly beach with shallow sea and sand. There are not beach chairs and sunshades for rent but there is a shower and coffee bar on beach.

Beach Trstenik is located in the same named district of the Split. Beach it self is pebble or gravel with shallow entrance and it is suitable for families with small children. Sea is crystal blue because small gravel stones. The beach has showers, changing rooms, watch towers, and beach chairs for rent. Unfortunately there is no natural shade but there are few beach bars where you can stay in shade and refresh yourself with cold drink. Trstenik is 4km southeast from the center of Split or you will need to walk about 15-20 minutes from Firule.

Žnjan is newest built beach in Split and so far largest location for enjoy in sea and sun. The beach consists of several separated bays thus they are in fact several beaches stretching almost 1 km wide. Žnjan location is consisting mostly of pebble and rock beaches but it has one sand beach. Žnjan is very popular location in summer because it has lot of beach space, enough parking space and brilliant sea. Beaches have showers with drinkable water, changing rooms, watch towers and lot of beach bars where you can enjoy in day and night. Žnjan district (next to Trstenik ) is about 5 km from city center and you can reach it by bus number 15 or bus number 8. (if you go with bus number 8 you will need to walk about 10 minutes). Eastern part of beach has accessibility for the disabled.

The beach Ježinac is pebble and concrete and has natural shade under the pine treas. You can also jump from few meters high rocks and concrete in to the sea as i enjoyed when i was younger. Beach has changing rooms, watch tower, showers and concrete tables where you can sit and play cards, board games, eat and so. Beach is 3 km west from the city center.

Few minutes from beach Ježinac is another beach called Kaštelet or Obojana Svjetlost (colored light). This location is nice pebble beach and mostly younger people come here. This beach is also popular night location for going out. During the hot summer night few beach bars in Kaštelet are turning beach into the popular summer night party location. That’s why the Kaštelet is also known as Obojana Svjetlost (colored light) because parties and light show in night.

From beach Kaštelet you will need to drive (with car or bus number 21) about 5-10 minutes to the west along within pine trees in district Meje. Then on bus stop you are on entrance of beach Kašuni. Beach has spacious parking place where you can find parking place even during summer. The beach has showers, changing rooms, coffee bars, watch tower as all other beaches in Split. But this beaches is partly pebble and partly sand and partly rock and it is largest beach on west bank of city. It is popular destination for locals, tourists, younger people and families alike and some parts of Kašuni have natural shade under pine trees.

Bene is beach located all out from resident part of Split in western bank of park forest Marjan. However there is bus number 21 and when you reach last step you are on beach Bene. However around yourself you will see thick pine forest park with playground facilities for tennis, football, and other sports. Beach it self is concrete but entrance in sea is pebble or sand. As all other beaches this one also have changing rooms, showers, beach bars, but still it is different because it is thick pine forest and Bene is mostly overlooking to the west and partly north so you can see Kaštela, Čivo and Trogir.

When you leave the apartment, on your left you will find Riva, where you can enjoy the first morning coffee, or maybe try a local specialty in one of many restaurants. Riva is connected with another promenade called West Coast, and our apartments are situated where these two promenades meet.

This part of the city is called Matejuška. It is the traditonal part of Split, as it was and still is a place where fishermen meet in the early morning before setting off with their ships towards the open sea. There are many stories about Matejuška; it is the city’s hub during the summer, where both locals and tourists go for a first drink before heading to the beach clubs. Matejuška is where the new and the old worlds meet – you’ll find there old, wooden fishing boats girded with nets, while just a short distance away you’ll see tourist cruise ships and exclusive yachts. If you wake up early, you might even see fishermen returning from their shifts to unload their catches.

Locals have a saying ‘Ćuti se povijest’, which means that you can almost feel, taste and smell the history of old Split. Matejuška is even older than Split and its palace. A natural cove, the sea in times past extended all the way to the walls of its houses. Matejuška has been an inspiration to many, especially poets and songwriters. Even today, youth gather at Matejuška and sing local songs in this natural ambiance.

Split and Matejuška will surely leave you speechless. You simply must come and see it for yourself!

Split - a slice of living history

No matter what side of the world you are coming from, Split awaits you with monumental stone gates, whose names reflect their traditional use - the Golden, the Silver, the Bronze and the Iron. The labyrinthine alleys of Split inevitably lead to the central square, the Peristyle, where you will be adressed at noon of every summer day by embodied Diocletian, attended by his imperial guard.

A magnificent view of Split opens up from the top of the sixty-meter bell tower of Saint Dominus. The cathedral gates with their thirteenth-century woodcarvings depicting scenes from the life of Christ are a mere introduction to the wealth that awaits in the treasury inside.

Split will tickle your imagination with their 3500 year old Egyptian sphinxes, temples surviving from antiquity, Baroque palaces, stone ramparts and fortresses.
